If you picked up your game HUD from a vendor, you will start working under the vendor's owner. The first few turns would be a good opportunity to work on your skills and work your day job to get some starting income and energy. If you would like to change bosses early on, be sure to check out the MogulWood Group or website www.mogulwood.com for potential bosses!
COMMON MOGULWOOD TERMS
Boss:
This is the player that you work directly under. Whlie under contract with your boss, you pay them a certain percentage of profits made on money you have earned at the box office. In return they may pay you a signing bonus for remaining under their employ for a certain length of time.
Contract:
This is the job offer a potential boss will offer you, or that you will offer potential employees. A contract has several features such as turn length of employ, commission percentage and signing bonus. For more info please see the CONTRACTS AND EMPLOYMENT section.
Employee:
These are players that work directly under you. You will receive a percentage of their box office profits while you have a contract with them.
Energy:
Your Energy stat is factored into how much money you make at your day job as well as the bonus to movie production. Unlike the fame stat, energy must be earned through effort! To attempt to raise your energy, you will need to “Work Day Job” (ACTION Option 1) or if your agent is available, have her try to book you a job. (STUDIO Option 6 -> Option 3).
The energy cap works at the same level as the fame cap, so when your energy is maxed out, you will need to purchase Personal Items from the shopping menu.
Fame:
Your fame stat affects many of the actions you can take in MogulWood. Fame is factored in to how much money you make at your day job, provides a bonus to your movie production efforts, and helps decide your rank and the rank of those you work for. To advance fame, it must be bought with Option 3: Self Promotion (+Fame) on the ACTION! Tab. Fame can also be acquired from special events.
As you buy fame points, you will eventually hit the maximum fame cap. To raise the fame cap, you will need to go to Option 5: Go Shopping on the ACTION! Tab, then go to Option 2: Shop for Personal Items (+fame).
The cost per fame point rises with each cap level so be sure to max out your fame before raising the bar!
Mogulbucks (M$):
The currency used in MogulWood. These are prefaced by a M$ symbol in references everywhere. You earn M$ each turn automatically, and can earn even more by working your day job or having your agent book you for temporary jobs when she is available.
Answering the end of turn trivia correctly also entitles you to payday and skill bonuses. You can also get a 15% Pro Bonus for being a MogulWood Pro-Tools Subscriber, and an additional 10% Neo-Realms Synergy Bonus by playing MogulWood in a sim with Neo-Realms Fishing installed! For more information on Neo-Realms Fishing visit http://fish.neorealms.com
Skills:
There are seven skills (Design, Music, Writing, Acting, Cinematography, Directing, Effects) involved in movie production. You can advance these by working on a movie project and using the skill.
Like Fame and Energy, the skills have a cap and can be raised by using Option 5: Go Shopping on the ACTION! Tab, and then go to Option 3: Shop for Craft Items (+Skill Cap).
To check on your fame, energy, or skills cap, go to the STUDIO Tab and click Option 1. Skills are listed on a separate page from fame and energy. You can also click on the menu button at the button of the HUD and click the stats button.
CONTRACTS AND EMPLOYMENT
To do meaningful things in MogulWood, you will first need to work under someone and their studio. Once you are established you can branch out and get your own employees, and eventually create your own studio if you wish!
To work for someone, you will need to sign a contract. Contracts bind a player to their boss for a certain amount of turns, in exchange for a signing bonus. The boss will receive a certain percentage of the player’s profits from box office revenue. For this to happen, the boss will need to write up the contract and offer it to you.
The key factors involved in a contract are:
Length: This is the amount of turns remaining in the contract. If the contract expires, then it will automatically continue with the same terms. However, you may break the rolling contract at any time. Contract length runs from 200-750 turns.
Commission Percentage: The amount to be given to the boss whenever the player receives box office profits from work on a movie.
Signing Bonus: This is the amount of money the boss will pay the employee for signing the contract. If the employee breaks a contract that does not have an “out” clause, then they will have to pay 1.5 times the signing bonus back in penalty.
Contract “Out” Clause: if the contract has an out clause, the player will pay no penalty fee to the boss if they decide to break the contract. If there is a clause in affect, then they must pay 1.5 times the signing bonus back in penalty. The contract automatically has an "Out" clause if no signing bonus is offered, otherwise there is no "Out" clause in effect.
If you just started the game, you will receive an automatic contract offer when you begin the game from the affiliate you received the HUD from. If you did not receive one from a player, you will receive an offer to work for a non-player character, Banky Strauss of NPC Studios. You may break this original contract at any time.
Note: Your boss cannot offer you a new contract until your old contract expires.
ACCEPTING A CONTRACT OFFER
When your turn starts, you will be presented with news in your Daily Journal. If someone has sent you a contract offer, it will appear as a yellow button with the text “New Offer”. Click on the yellow button and you will be presented with the contract proposal. Review the terms, and if you find them acceptable click “Yes” to accept them. This will end your turn so be sure to read news or take any other business before accepting! If you choose “No”, you may go about your turn as normal.
One offer comes in at a time, so if you had multiple offers waiting, and selected “No” declining the current offer, then the next turn a new offer from someone else will be waiting.
If you selected “Yes”, then you will be working for your boss starting next turn, and become a member of their studio! Any pending offers that were waiting for you will be automatically declined.
Remember: if you are already in a contract that does not have an out clause and wish to break the contract, you will have to pay 1.5x the contract signing bonus back in penalty!
CREATING A CONTRACT OFFER
Offering a contract will present another player with the opportunity to work under you. You can have an unlimited number of people under you, and they will all be affiliated with your studio. Should you leave the studio or work for a boss in a different studio, all of your underlings and their underlings will move with you. This will not affect your employees’ contracts in any way.
If another boss employs someone you want to hire, you can’t make them an offer directly. However, if your agent happens to be available this turn, you can have her sneak the offer over to the person you want to hire!
To offer a contract to another player, go to THE STUDIO tab and select Option 4: Work with Contracts, then select Option 1: Hire someone or renew contract. Then type the name or partial name of the person you are interested in. You will receive a confirmation box and click the “Yes” button if that name is correct. Click “Yes” once again if the player is confirmed as your target.
Once you have found the person you are looking for, you can then Create a custom contract or use a predefined contract template. You can walk through each step and select the perfect contract for your needs.
Note that by offering a contract with a signing bonus, the MogulBucks involved will be deducted from your account immediately. Should they decline the contract, you will receive a refund.
WORKING IN A STUDIO, CONTRIBUTING TO A MOVIE PROJECT
By working in a studio, you will be able to create your own movies or contribute to studio movies that are currently in production.
To find a studio movie project that is underway, go the ACTION! Tab and select Option 6: Movie Production. Then select Option 2: Choose Movie Project to work on. Select “YES” and then you will see a list of the top 7 current movies in production and their current status.
The status codes you will find next to a movie are:
(Created): This is a brand new movie. It still needs to be funded and greenlit before going into PREproduction. If selected, the only action you will be able to do to this movie is contribute to the movie budget.
(Budgeted): The movie has been budgeted by the producer, but is still waiting for a greenlight to commence PREproduction. If selected, you will be able to contribute to the budget.
(PRE): This movie is in PREproduction. It will run for a period of time determined by the producer from when the movie was greenlit. If selected, you will be able to contribute to Design, Music and Writing for the movie as well as add to the budget.
(PROD): This movie is in Production. It runs for the same amount of time that PREproduction. If selected, you will be able to contribute to Acting, Cinematography, Directing and Effects as well as the budget.
(Done): This movie has completed all production and is off to the box office! It cannot be selected.
Once you have selected the movie and it is in a PREproduction or Production mode, you can contribute to the movie each turn by clicking on the ACTION! Tab and selecting Option 4: Work on Current Movie. You can then select your desired skills to be put to work.
If you have purchased any Studio Items in the Shopping menu, they will also provide a production bonus to your contribution as well.
Each amount of effort you put towards the movie entitles you to a slice of the profits!
YOUR SKILLS
In MogulWood, there are seven skills that you can level. These will help you increase your ability to make movies. Some skills take place in the PREPRODUCTION stage, others in PRODUCTION stage of the movie.
- Design (PRE)
- Music (PRE)
- Writing (PRE)
- Acting (PROD)
- Cinematography (PROD)
- Directing (PROD)
- Effects (PROD)
You can level these skills by clicking on the action tab and selecting Option 2 “Practice your Craft (+Skill)“. The lower your skill, the easier it will be to level up. You can also raise your skill by applying your selected skill towards a movie production.
Eventually you will hit a skill cap and will not be able to advance farther. When this happens, you will need to go shopping. On the Action! Tab, select Option 5 “Go Shopping” and then 1. “Shop for Craft Items (+Skill Cap)“. You will then be able to buy a higher skill cap, if you can afford it. If you can’t afford it, the HUD will notify you.
To view your current skills and skill caps, click on THE STUDIO tab and select Option 1: “View Studio and Personal Info“. It will be on Page 4.
You can either spread out your skills to be a more jack-of-all-trades type contributor, or specialize in just a few skills to make you wanted for big studio projects! Smaller projects tend to favor a larger skill set so you can cover more holes in production, whereas big studios will want specialized skill sets to deliver as much contribution as possible.
Here’s a list of the products you create for a movie with your skills:
PREPRODUCTION (Skill -> Product Created)
DESIGN -> BLUEPRINT
MUSIC -> SOUNDTRACK
WRITING -> SCRIPT
PRODUCTION (Skill -> Product Created)
ACTING -> PERFORMANCE
CINEMATOGRAPHY -> ARTISTRY
DIRECTING -> DIRECTION
EFFECTS -> EFFECTS
FUNDING A MOVIE
Contributing skills isn’t the only way to profit from a movie project, you can also contribute MogulBucks! When a movie is created, a certain percentage of future profits is set aside for the financers of the film. For example, if you contribute what turns out to be 10% of the budget, you will receive 10% of that portion of the profits.
To fund a movie, first select the movie project you wish to work on if you have not done so. Then go to the ACTION! Tab and select Option 6: Movie Production. Then select Option 4. Set Budget on Current Project. Choose the amount of money you wish to contribute and select OK. You don’t need to be a certain rank to do this, everyone can do it!
Be careful: funding before PREproduction begins is a great way to get the maximum budget allocated, but as PREproduction begins the allocation becomes much more expensive as sets and designs have already been made. Production budgets are very expensive to allocate as filming is underway and it is expensive for big changes to be made at that process. Be sure to fund the project as early as possible!
YOUR AGENT AND PERSONAL ASSISTANT
On special turns, your agent or personal assistant may show up. They will open up new options for you to pursue for the turns they are there. You will receive a special news item when they are available that turn.
As your rank increases, your personal assistant is available on more turns.
Personal Assistant Tasks:
To access your Personal Assistant (when available), click on THE STUDIO tab select Option 6: [Personal Assistant]: Assistant Tasks. From here you can:
- Get Detailed Project Status Update
This will show you the total amount of skills contributed to the movie project you are working on. This is important to trying to keep the skill contributions as equal as possible and help direct the skill efforts. You must have a movie project selected to access this task.
- Collect Market Research
Here you can select the genre and amount of MogulBucks you wish to contribute to the research budget. The greater the amount of money, the more accurate the results will be. Market Research helps judge which genres of movies will be popular in the immediate future.
- Call to Arrange Meeting with Agent
If you really need your agent to visit and cannot wait, you can ask your Personal Assistant to try to reach your agent this turn. Be careful though, she’s not always successful!
- Reject All Offers
If you are happy with your contract or are very popular and have too many offers from random people coming to you every turn, you can choose for your P.A. to reject all incoming offers automatically. However you will not be able to receive contract offers until you use this option again the next time your P.A. visits, and toggle it back, which will allow you to accept offers again.
- Go Shopping
Your personal assistant can also shop for new items for you to increase your skill caps. You can also reach this via ACTION MENU 5. Go Shopping [Personal Assistant]
- Reject Applicants
This toggles allowing potential employees to automatically join you without having to send them a contract. Employees who join in this matter have standard breakable contracts that players begin the game with.
Agent Tasks:
Your agent will allow you to force a studio change, create a new studio, attempt to lure someone to work for you, or try to book you for some work.
To change your studio, go the THE STUDIO Tab and select Option 2: [Agent] Change Studio Allegiances. From there you can create your own studio, leave your current studio (and boss), or Work for NPC studios directly under Banky Strauss. You can also directly join underneath another player without the need for them to send you a contract. By doing this you will start with the basic contract offered to people who just start the game.
WARNING: Changing studios will destroy any current movies you have created and are producing, that are not yet in PREproduction or POSTproduction!
If you decide to create your own studio, it will cost M$10,000.
To have an agent book some work for you, click on THE STUDIO tab and select Option 5: Ask Agent to Find Work. Hopefully the next turn you will have something special waiting in your news report!
RANKS
As you gain more and more employees under you, and they gain employees under them, your rank will begin to rise. Your rank score is determined by your personal fame as well as the fame of all those under you. Rank determines how many concurrent movie projects you can create at a time. You need a minimum rank of “Jr. Production Assistant (300)” to create a movie. At rank “Jr. Associate Producer (10000)“ you can create two at a time. Your rank also determines the maximum amount of MogulBucks can be transferred to your account per day.
ANATOMY OF A MOVIE PROJECT
Creating movies is a very important part of MogulWood. Here is the lifecycle of the usual movie:
- Producer creates the movie
The producer of the studio goes to the ACTION! Tab and selects Option 6: Movie Production, then Option 3: Create New Movie. The producer sets the production timeline to option 3, so that PREproduction will run 7 days and PROduction will run for 7 days. They pay the starting cost of M$2000 and select a genre and movie title. Then they submit the paperwork to MogulWood that turn.
- The movie is now in (Created) stage. Next the movie must be assigned a budget. The producer goes to the ACTION! Tab and selects Option 6: Movie Production, then Option 4: Set Budget on Current Project. They set the starting budget and the financers’ percentage of the profits. Others may also contribute to the budget at this time.
- The movie is now in the (Budgeted) stage. Once the budget has been set, the Producer is ready to greenlight the film! They go to the ACTION! Tab and select Option 6: Movie Production, then Option 5: Greenlight Movie.
- The movie immediately begins PREproduction (PRE). PREproduction will run for the time set in the producer’s timetable. During this time all studio employees can contribute Design, Music and Writing skill to the movie.
- At the end of PREproduction, Production phase (PRO) begins. Studio employees can contribute Acting, Cinematography, Directing and Effects.
- Once production ends, the movie hits the box office! Popularity is computed, and everyone earns profits based on the movie’s Box Office ranking each day! Finance Profits are divided by the percentage of total MogulBucks contributed, and Work Profits are divided by the percentage of total efforts placed into the movie.
GENRES OF MOVIES
When creating a movie, you are able to set the genre of the movie. The genre popularity changes every week, so it’s important to pick a genre that will hit during your box office run. The genre types are:
- Action
- Horror
- Comedy
- Drama
- Period Piece
- Sci-Fi
- Western
SCORING AT THE BOX OFFICE
In order for your movie to hit with maximum bonus, there are several factors that go into popularity. Failing to hit certain popularity benchmarks can really hurt your movie’s box office run. The factors involved are:
1. Budget Allocation
For a movie to do well, it needs to be well funded. For each Mogulbuck donated to a movie budget, a certain amount of budget points is allocated to the movie. These budget points offset the amount of skill points your studio employees are contributing. If the employees contribute more skill points than budget points, the box office ranking will be negatively affected for having low production value. However, if there are more budget points than skill points, the movie will get a high production value bonus.
When the movie is in the (Created) or (Budgeted) phase, this is the best time to fund the movie. You will get 10 budget points for each M$1 spent.
In the PREproduction phase, you will receive 10 budget points for each M$2 spent.
And in Production phase, you will receive 10 budget points for every M$5 spent, so it’s very important to fund early!
Bigger budgets will also help the movie last longer at the box office.
2. PREproduction and Production Synchronicity
When you receive a detailed project status report from your Personal Assistant, you will see percentages next to the PREproduction and POSTproduction skillsets. Great movies have a perfect blend of all skills involved in their creation, so you want to keep your skills as close to even as possible. This means 33% for each PREproduction skill, and 25% for each Production skill. Big differences in the amount of skills contributed can lead to an unbalanced movie, making the movie less popular.
3. Genre Popularity
Each week, different genres become popular, and other genres grow tiring to the public. By gauging public interest in the correct genre for the box office run using the Personal Assistant’s Market Research, you can hit at just the right time to boost your box office rankings.
4. Movie Timeline
Shorter movie production timelines that bring a movie to market quicker may result in shorter a lifespan at the theaters. While there are not big bonuses for long timelines, long timelines may work better for small studios who want to compete with the majors!
5. Weekend Grosses
Saturdays and Sundays will have less of a decline in profits than other days of the week.
